Caught Live: TORI KELLY @ Bush Hall London 30th Jan 2013

It's always a good sign when a US artist can sell out their debut headline show in the UK within one day. It is an especially good sign when the artist isn't even signed to a major label, but that is just what has happened in the case of TORI KELLY.

At only 20 years old, she has already had an interesting career but without the mainstream success of others. Having won TV Talent show 'America's Most Talented Kids' in her early teens, TORI was soon signed to Geffen records but was dropped before and album was even released. She even auditioned for American Idol where she (despite getting a 'no' from SIMON COWELL) she made it through to the final 24 but failed to go any further.

After this she took to posting her music on YouTube and it was there that she was spotted by Scooter Braun, who also serves as manager for a certain JUSTIN BIEBER, who took control of her career. With growing success in America, it was time to take her music International.

And so to London.....

Having announced earlier in the day via Twitter that she would be there for a meet & greet when doors opened at 7pm, it seemed that nearly all of the approximately 350 lucky people that had managed to get their hands on a ticket had arrived early just to have their chance of a moment with the internet singing sensation.

The audience also included many of her peers from the UK music scene. Among those in attendance at this unique event included CONOR MAYNARD, The WANTED's MAX GEORGE, BLUEY ROBINSON & MIKE HOUGH who all made it along to West London's Bush Hall hoping to witnessing something special....and they were not to be disappointed.

With just her guitar awaiting her, she arrived on stage to rapturous applause from the packed house. As she launched into first song 'Celestial' the anticipation was palpable. The applause died down to near silence as TORI began to sing, with the exception of a few 'oohs & ahs' as she immediately hit some incredible notes and riffs.

Further tracks from her most recent EP 'Handmade Songs' followed' with most of the crowd knowing and singing along to almost every word.

She has soulful tone to her voice, reminiscent of R&B divas like MARIAH CAREY & CHRISTINA AGUILERA but with a softer sond. Her guitar playing is (almost) faultless too and this gives her an edge over other vocalists. The lyrical content of her songs is also not just that of throwaway pop, it has depth and personal meaning.

But not only does she handle her own material with style, she also put a great spin on other people's songs too. Both her YouTube covers of FRANK OCEAN's 'Thinkin' Bout You' and her great take on MICHAEL JACKSON's 'P.Y.T' were recreated on stage with the latter bringing the biggest reaction of the night, causing the singer to stop in her tracks to take in the acclaim.

Not since the first time I saw ED SHEERAN perform have I personally witnessed, and heard, an audience react in the way they did to one person simply standing alone on stage with just a guitar, such was the power and quality of her performance.

If this show is an indication of what we can expect from her in future, it will not be long before TORI KELLY is a multi-million selling artist, more than capable of selling out arenas. I for one feel honoured to have been able to seen such a potentially huge star in such an intimate venue.

ALICIA KEYS has just unleashed this new version of her forthcoming single on Soundcloud.

Originally a ballad taken from the album 'Girl On Fire', on this dance inspired re-fix, renamed 'B.N.M Part 2' she takes more than a little inspiration from the 1991 club classic 'Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)' by house diva CRYSTAL WATERS.

Check out her original song and video here

It has also just been announced that ALICIA sing the National Anthem at this weekend's Superbowl ahead of BEYONCÉ's half-time comeback performance.

New Video: NE-YO featuring FRENCH MONTANA - Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself) (Rico Love Remix)

Having already had a UK #1 hit with the single in 2012, it's a bit of a case of better late than never with this brand new remixed version of NE-YO's track 'Let Me Love You'

However it was worth the wait as the previously up-tempo club style track is stripped back to an R&B groove and features a new cameo from rapper FRENCH MONTANA.

New Cover: GABRIELLA CILMI - Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon

It's been a while since we've heard from Aussie songstress GABRIELLA CILMI, but nearly 3 years on since the release of her last album 'Ten' she surprised fans as she took to YouTube to post this unusual cover.

The clip shows off her new look, with her pixie-ish cropped hair style as she performs a version of the NEIL DIAMOND composition 'Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon' sat in a bathtub *fully clothed, I might add.

The song is probably best remembered as covered by URGE OVERKILL and featured on the soundtrack to QUENTIN TARANTINO's 'PULP FICTION'

See what you think of her version below

She has also just been announced to appear on the bill of a Moxafrica Fundraiser
charity concert taking place in London on March 6th. Click here for details

Hopefully this means that new material is not too far away, in the meantime to keep up to date with GABRIELLA ....

New Video: ARLISSA - Sticks And Stones

Following on from her duet with NAS, this is technically the official solo debut from one of the big names to watch for 2013, ARLISSA releases the new video for 'Sticks And Stones'

Shot in and around the swamps of Louisiana, the video reflects the tribal feel and sound of the track.

New Video: NICOLE SCHERZINGER - Boomerang

Now that the X Factor madness has died down, NICOLE SCHERZINGER 'comes back' to the music scene with her new single and video 'Boomerang' (see what we did there?)

As a solo artist, she still has yet to release anything that has been as memorable as she recorded with THE PUSSYCAT DOLLS however, despite being a little bit pop dance by numbers this is on the right track and certainly sticks in your head after a few plays.

See if you think it's 'Schermazing' or not....

New Music: ARTFUL - Unfinished Business EP (Free Download)

One of the pioneers of UK Garage is back with a brand new EP.

'Unfinished Business' is a collection of 6 track from DJ ARTFUL (aka MARK HILL), best known as one half of production duo ARTFUL DODGER who were responsible for some of the biggest and best hits of the genre at the turn of the millennium.

Having produced and remixed for other artists, including the best selling debut album 'Born To Do It' from CRAIG DAVID, Mark took time out from the scene but returned in 2011 to work on new music.

The new EP pretty much continues where he left off, a set of funky, uptempo tracks with a soulful vibe. He has also managed to call in a few favours in the vocal department with guest appearances from CAIRO and TERRI WALKER (*check out 'He Love Me' below).

New Music: HAYLEY CASSIDY - Stripped (FREE ALBUM) *Update*

It's not often we get a UK Soul/R&B album that's good from end to end. Even more unusual is to get it for free!

However that's exactly what you get from the new album 'Stripped' from HAYLEY CASSIDY.

The album features 12 all new compositions from the London singer/songwriter. Her music mixes up the sound of classic 90's R&B (think BRANDY etc) with a modern twist, while lyrically dealing with deep, personal issues.

The teaser video for the interlude 'So Gone' gives you an indication of her style.

as does the newly issued video for the 'Wish You Well' Outro

New Lyric Video: JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE - Suit & Tie

Still no official video for JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE's big comeback track, but this new lyric video is actually better than most featuring extremely cool footage of the man himself.

According to his label, the song also reached #1 on iTunes singles charts in 31 countries, including the U.S., England. Internationally, the song featuring JAY-Z made it into the top 10 on the iTunes singles charts in 54 countries.

It also reportedly broke U.S. radio airplay records by earning the biggest song debut.

Caught Live: SOLANGE KNOWLES at XOYO, London. 16th Jan 2013

Last night saw the return to London's music stage for the first time in nearly 4 years of Miss SOLANGE KNOWLES.

Often overshadowed, both musically and personally, by her big sister (who, for the 3 people reading this that don't already know, goes by the name of BEYONCÉ) it can often seem as though she has a point to prove.

However on the strength of this performance, she really has no need to worry.

With much more of a free reign with her musical style and without the constraints of a major record company to hold her back, THIS Knowles is free to explore a variety of different musical directions, which is clearly displayed on her new EP 'True' which she was in town to promote. Often this leads to a much more interesting sound which she was able to showcase here.

In the intimate surroundings of East London's XOYO, SOLANGE appeared on stage for the first of two shows in front of a sell out crowd to the chugging beat of 'Some Things Never Seem To F****** Work', looking resplendent in a matching floral patterned trouser suit & shirt.

She proceeded to showcase other track from the EP, with the help of it's co-producer, co-writer, co-vocalist and guitarist DEV HYNES, but also took time to take it back with some of her past work from her last full album 'SoL-AngeL and the Hadley Street Dreams' (including the singles 'T.O.N.Y' & crowd pleaser 'Sandcastle Disco') and one track from her 2003 debut 'Solo Star', the Pharrell produced 'Crush', asking the audience 'who has been following me since I was 15??'

The band, whom she admitted were only playing their 4th ever gig together, were tight and the perfect accompaniment to SOLANGE's epic vocal performance and perfect tone. She also showed she had a few moves which she displayed on some of the uptempo cuts (see 'Locked In Closets' below).

She also threw in an unusual cover in the form of, what she described as, one of her favourite songs, a version of late latin superstar SELENA's 'I Could Fall In Love'.

There was also an opportunity for an exclusive debut, the full length version of one of the True's shorter tracks 'Look Good With Trouble'

The hour long set was wrapped up with a energetic performance of the EP's lead track and dancefloor favourite 'Losing You'

SOLANGE may never reach the levels of fame that her sister has achieved but if this means that she continues to have the freedom to produce intelligent and interesting soulful music of this quality and enjoy performing it as much as it appears she does on the evidence of this show, then perhaps this is can only be a good thing.

Don't Let Me Down
T.O.N.Y
Lovers In Parking
