NEW VIDEO: PALOMA FAITH-Never Tear Us Apart

PALOMA FAITH

Never Tear Us Apart

NEW VIDEO

Paloma recently joined the ever growing list of artists (including Slow Moving Millie, Fyfe Dangerfield & Ellie Goulding) that have recorded new versions of classic hits for a John Lewis advertising campaign.

Her cover (and first ever to be released as a single) of INXS' 1987 hit has been heard accompanying the short film featuring a couple's relationship on a split screen between the 1920's and the present day.

The new video dispenses with this imagary in favour of an incredibly stylish stage performance that features Paloma's full live band interspersed with images of a mystery man who enters the theatre at the very end (and finally puts a smile on her face!)

Filmed on location at East London's famous Troxy, a 1930's art deco Grade II listed building and concert venue, the video was beautifully styled by Karl Willett (who has previously worked with Jessie J and more) and co-directed by Faith's regular official photographer, Saul.

UPDATED: CHERRI VONCELLE - GOOD MOURNING MADAME ROUGE E.P

CHERRI VONCELLE
GOOD MOURNING MADAME ROUGE
E.P

Just over a year since dropping the 'Shades Of Red' EP, Cherri is back with a brand selection.

Having spent much of the last year supporting and performing with JESSIE J on tour, she managed to find the time to write and record the 6 tracks on offer here. The artist formally known as Cherri V has also reverted to her full name for this release.

'Good Mourning Madame Rouge' clearly deals with an array of deeply personal issues but the pure emotion involved works in it's favour as her voice has never sounded better.

The project was overseen by long term collaborator and friend JERMAINE RILEY (who also created the amazing cover art) and features writing and production credits from the likes of Jake Isaac, Wizzy Wow Parallel & Hannah and Sam Vasanth.

You can download the EP now for free here

JESSIE WARE-DEVOTION: ALBUM LAUNCH SHOW

JESSIE WARE
DEVOTION
ALBUM LAUNCH SHOW
15TH September 2012

The UK just seems to be on a roll when it comes to producing talented female vocalists, all clambering for the right to claim the ‘next big thing’ title. So now we are presented with another for our consideration.

Jessie Ware has been quietly building her musical status over the last couple of years, both through her solo work and a few cool & clever collaborations. Her image evokes the classier side of the 80’s and has a musical style that is gives a nod some of that decades most successful UK female artists, with both Sade and Lisa Stansfield both being clear influences (although vocally very different), while maintaining a very modern electronic sound.

Plan B in Brixton was the venue for her album launch and having been to the venue on a few occasions in the past I personally have never seen it quite so busy for one artist. As a local girl, this was an extra special homecoming gig for Jessie, with many family and friends in attendance.
From the start you could tell that she was extra hyped up for this performance. Kicking off with the album’s title track, the audience was immediately captivated.

More tracks from ‘Devotion’ followed, including the uptempo “110%” and forthcoming single “Sweet Talk” which she dedicated to her boyfriend (although explaining that he would hate that).

Jessie was soon to be joined on stage by the first of two special guests. Dave Okumu, singer, guitarist and frontman of ‘The Invisible’ was introduced as the man who first helped Jess out in the studio and has been a major influence on her ever since. He played and rapped on the track ‘No To Love’

Next, we were treated to another guest appearance. Sampha, vocalist and keyboard player with SBTRKT is the man responsible for producing Jessie’s sparse cover of the Bobby Caldwell soul classic “What You Won't Do For Love”. He joined her for a version of that song but not before performing the beautiful non album track ‘Valentine’.

The radio hit ‘Wildest Moments’ then followed and previous single ‘Running’ rounded out the show and brought us to the end. I believe we had all witnessed the emergence of a great new talent. Jessie more than proved that she has the material and the ability to deliver her sound to a greater audience.

With the album released this week, it will be interesting to see how she fairs but my hunch says that the title of best British female next year is going to be a hard fought battle with Jessie Ware being among them.

Nearly 8 years since his last full studio album 'Patience', (and launched 30 years to the day that his first ever single 'Wham Rap' was released) GEORGE MICHAEL is back with this brand new composition.

The dance-floor friendly track draws inspiration from his recent illness that brought the near death experience the deeply personal lyrics refer to.

Review: Dionne Reid – Smile EP & launch night

It seems like it's been a long time coming but the new EP from London vocalist Dionne Reid has finally arrived and as the title suggests, it really has made us SMILE.

Dionne's music is a mix of classic & modern soul with elements of reggae, dancehall & lovers rock and she sites Lauryn Hill as her main inspiration to make music. She's probably best know to date for the track 'Daddy Dear' which gained plays on Radio 1 & 1 Xtra last year, as well as a live performance on the BBC's Glastonbury TV coverage.

The arrival of the EP was celebrated and officially launched with a performance at Something For Sunday (somethingforsunday.co.uk), the fortnightly music and comedy night held in East London, where Dionne regular performs.

With musical support on the night from the fabulous Ella Chi and the laughs provide by KG Tha Comedian, it wasn't long before Dionne took to the stage.

Although in the company of many friends and musical peers, she was still a little nervous as she arrived in front of the capacity crowd, but the nerves soon washed away as she performed a mash-up of Gnarls Barkley's Smiley Faces and the EP's first track, the appropriate titled 'Here I Come' (which references the Barrington Levy classic of the same name).

Dionne seems very at home on stage, as well as being blessed with a beautiful voice, she has a good manner with the audience and her stage banter is genuine & naturally funny too.

Next in the set was 'Champion' (a reworking of the Chipmunk/Chris Brown hit), which was
followed by the beautiful and touching 'Angel' a song dedicated to her late Grandmother. Then came the only non-EP track of the night 'She Can't'

A live version of the EP's title track was next, S.M.I.L.E (which incidentally stands for See Meaning In Life's Experiences) brought a tear to the singer's eye and even choked her on the last note, but this did not stop the entire audience giving her a standing ovation.

Almost at the end of the show, we were presented with the EP's final track Back-Up which was given an almost latin flavoured treatment and Dionne's impromptu (but not totally serious) dance routine *the robot moves were the best.

The crowd wanted more and were still waiting to hear 'Daddy Dear'. They were not disappointed when Dionne rewarded them a faultless version of the song that had the entire audience providing backing vocals and brought us to the end of the night.

Later I listened to the EP in full. Having already heard the songs live the studio versions were as good if not better. The EP is also cleverly interspersed with short interludes, including a lovely snippet of children describing what a smile means to them as well as a cameo appreance from the legend that is 'Papa' Reid.

As a whole, the EP is just a strong and coherent as many full length major label albums out there today and comes thoroughly recommended, especially if you like the sound of what you've heard so far.

Below is just a short snippet of 'Here I Come' but for more information on Dionne or the EP, please visit dionnereid.com

Review: KAI - A Taste Of Me E.P

West Londoner Kai has previously worked with new artist Zalon Thompson, (Amy Winehouse‘s backing vocalist and platinum-selling songwriter) as well as MOBO Award winner, Jai Amore.

Her new EP does exactly what it says on the tin and brings us 6 tracks, a unique brand of pop/dance with a hint of R&B highlighting just a taste of what we can expect from Kai.

Kicking off with the acapella intro title track, Kai launches into a selection of uptempo dancefloor friendly tracks, best of which for me include 'Love Is Burning', 'Perfect Talent' and the first single 'Flirt', the video (see below) has already recieved plays on KissTV.

Kai clearly has a strong commercial musical sesibility and it will be interesting to hear what she has in store for us in the future.

If you like what you hear the EP is available now, visit her website www.kaikaimusic.co.uk for more information

Cleo Sol: Caught live and 'Never The Right Time' video

To mark the launch of her major label debut single 'Never The Right Time (Who Do Yo Love)' and the release of it's video, Cleo Sol performed an exclusive set at Notting Hill's famous club night, YoYo.
Cleo was raised just up the road in Ladbroke Grove by musical parents and has settled on a sound that reflects her unique heritage (her mother is half Serbian, half Spanish and her father is Jamaican). Having already worked with the likes of Tinie Tempah, Wretch 32 & Bashy, she is already one of the best known artists on the London live music scene.
Arriving on stage at the Notting Hill Arts Club in front of a packed capacity crowd, which included many big music industry faces, and looking stunning in a pink oriental style dress with a modern twist (as well as some VERY high heels), Cleo launched into her set with a cover of the Bacarach & David classic 'Walk On By'. Visible taken aback by the size of the audience that had turned out just to see her, she continued with several of her own compositition including fan favourites 'Call For Me' & 'Free My Mind'.

A superb cover of Frank Ocean's Thinking About You which had the whole crowd singing along, call & response style.

This was followed by her previous single, the ska influence summer anthem from last year, 'High'.

Cleo rounded off her set with a new song (to me anyway), the very funky 'Did I Tell You' and finally we were treated to a live performance of 'Never The Right Time'.The song, produced by Davinche samples The Isley Brothers classic ‘Work To Do’ which gives the track it’s funky 70’s feel & the live version had the same vibe.

The hot video (which you can see below) features Cleo in a variety of styles referencing some of her musical inspirations.

Never The Right Time is officially released on July 2nd through Island Records.

SOULCASE LIVE-Launch Night-14th March 2012

With so much hot unsigned musical talent about it’s always good to see the arrival of a new night where these artists can be seen doing what they do best live on stage. SOULCASE is the brainchild of UYG, a collective of events management students who pulled together a great line up for this their debut show. The night was also in support of Youth Music, a charity working with young people in the UK to help them succeed through and with music.
The music of every act appearing at SOULCASE has their roots in an aspect of soul music, with a variety of styles from R&B to rap and even poetry. With warm up from DJ Danos from CGS & Dappa from Rinse FM it was time for our host Grime Daily’s Claira Hermet to introduce the first performer.
ELLA MARIE is a multi talented artist. Not only classically trained pianist & violinist but has a beautiful angelic voice that just has to be heard. Having recently been racking up multiple views for a range of unique covers on Youtube, it’s with a medley of two of these songs that she kicked off the performance. Drake’s Take Care & Lana Del Ray’s Born To Die both performed perfectly with just a piano to accompany her. This was followed up with one of her own compositions, the beautiful ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ proving that she has the talent to compete with the likes of the talent she has been covering.

Next on stage was TANIA with some interesting spoken word/poetry for the SOULCASE crowd. Giving us two of her poems, the heartfelt 'Lonely Tonight’ and the entertaining 'I Ain't Even Mad' which had the audience calling back the title to her & was genuinely funny. It’s clear she has something to say and knows how to make people listen.

Unfortunately for our next artist, illness had struck. SIAN THOMAS was due to perform 3 tracks but had to cut her set down to just one song after being hit with a bout of tonsillitis. Joined on stage by the house band she performed ‘I Don't Wanna Be Alone’ but sore throat or not she sounded amazing. I can only imagine how good she would be on full strength. Hopefully we will see her back on the SOULCASE stage again soon.

Following Sian was the artist who had travelled furthest to be with us but Manchester’s LOIS DAVINA is no stranger to the London music scene, having appeared at several other venues throughout the capital. Once again the house band accompanied her on 3 of her self-penned tracks. With a powerful voice reminiscent of some the great soul divas of the late 70’s & early 80’s, Lois blew everyone away particularly on recent single ‘Centre Stage’ and certainly left a lasting impression with the audience.

Just when it was starting to look like a female take over it was the job of IN’SIGHT to represent for the guys. With obvious influences from soul vocal groups from the past the duo launched into a unique covers medley which went from Queen to Rihanna, all in the space of 5 minutes! The boys then provided two further samples of their own material, bringing memories of the likes of Jodeci, Boyz II Men and some of the classic R&B of the 90’s right back. Their style and harmonies are not to be messed with.

A lady who has been making some big moves in the industry while earning a few big name fans along the way is KYRA. Having recently been chosen to support Wretch 32 on his forthcoming tour, it’s easy to see why there has been so much interest. She was joined on stage by the newly christened ‘Kyrettes’, who all were styled in their white shirts and bow ties. Her first song ‘I Hate My Job’ was a brilliant way to start and had the whole crowd singing along to the ultra catchy chorus (If that isn’t a future hit single there is something wrong in the world). 3 more tracks followed including the emotional ‘Bandages’ written for a lost loved one which was beautifully performed. KYRA will be a household name before too long so watch this space.

More from the guys next as we are treated to some smooth soul from the very dapper DEJA. The one time garage MC has certainly mellowed over the years as proved by his first song, the laid back groove of ‘Fall’. After this he was then joined on stage by rapper PEPSTAR for his track ‘Way You Walk’, something that seemed to go down well with the crowd. Having recently been collaborating with some of Ed Sheeran’s writing and production team, it certainly won’t be long til we hear more from this man.

Twitter: @Deja_Official
The last of the ladies to hit the stage is LILY MCKENZIE, a versatile singer/songwriter who can turn her hand to anything from acoustic pop to dance & grime. Lily treated us to 2 of the 4 songs from her newly released EP ‘Breathe’ (the rocking ‘Circles’ and the very radio friendly ‘Forget About Us’) as well as a live version of “For You” (the house cut she recorded with Funkystepz). With an energetic stage presence, it’s obvious why her music career is taking on to bigger and better things.

Last but by no means least was South London rapper FEM FEL. One of the best know and most popular MCs on the London scene. Again someone who admitted to not feeling 100% on the night he still managed a storming set, joined on stage by the returning DEJA who provided the vocals on his 3 tracks (‘Christian Dior’, ‘Hero’ & the title track of his debut album ‘Eyes Closed’) and bringing to end in fine form what was an amazing evening for new talent.
